“We reject the false teaching...” The Barmen Theological Declaration - A confession of the Gospel in troubled times
A virtual exhibition by Landeskirchliches Archiv der Evangelischen Kirche von Westfalen
90 years ago, on May 31, 1934, the “Theological Declaration on the Present Situation of the German Protestant Church (DEK)” was adopted at the first confessional synod in the Gemarker Church in Wuppertal-Barmen. For the first time since the Reformation in the 16th century, representatives of the Lutheran, Reformed and United churches had agreed on a common affirmation of their faith in order to distance themselves from National Socialist church politics and the transformation of Christianity. The Barmen Theological Declaration is therefore also regarded as the foundation and founding document of the Protestant opposition movement of the “Confessing Church”. To this day, it is regarded as a groundbreaking testimony of doctrine and faith and has an impact far beyond the borders of Germany and its historical context of origin.
