Ihm wird bezeugt, dass er als ehelicher Sohn des Balthasar Hofmann, damals Pfarrers in Steingebronn auf der Alb, und der Appolonia Dreher, die noch lebt, vor ungefähr 24 Jahren geboren ist. Hans Melchior Hofmann ist bisher dem Herzog Friedrich zu Württemberg mit Leibeigenschaft zugetan gewesen, hat sich aber jetzt von dieser Leibeigenschaft frei und ledig gemacht.
